The Hill by Garlinda Birkbeck

The Hill by Garlinda Birkbeck

This book is the work of over 30 years photographing on the hill during the stalking season at Kinloch Hourn Estate in Scotland's Western Highlands.

The foreward is by Donald Cameron who was the Stalker during this period. Telling the story of his life as a stalker and the seasonal life of deer on the Hill.

  • Praise for The Hill

'Garlinda Birkbeck has stepped into 'my' kind of landscape, under 'my' skies. I am incredibly envious of how she has made these photographs. From the first picture of the stag, the work has the resonance of painting. These photographs reveal teh skill of someone who has been tracking deer for decades. I am looking at these pictures both as a photographer and as a country-dweller. I understand what these pictures mean. There is no cruelty involved. I am qualified to say this. There is a moral here. We have to understand that there is also love for the place and the prey. '

    Sir Don McCullin

'Garlinda Birkbeck is an intrepid photographer who loves people and places equally. The Hill captures a haunting seasonal ritual where man and mountain, sky and earth, distance and intimacy become united in the rich textures of tweed and bracken, cloud and rock. A rare, brilliant, timeless, visual testimony.'

    Sir Antony Gormley

'A photograph is said only to capture an instant. In these images the movement, the intent, the whole experience is suggested by Garlinda Birkbeck. These are not moments caught simply as the shutter opened, but powerful representations of everything in time and essence. Thayt is why they are so engaging.'
